Ryan Garcia’s consumption of Ostarine might be unintentional but what would be his penalty?
How can we stop fighters from popping when they did not intentionally take a banned substance?
There has been many fighters who tested positive for low levels of Ostarine.
UFC Fighters’ Cases
Sean O’Malley was hit with a six-month suspension.
Kyler Phillips and Darrius Flowers also were hit with six-month suspensions.
Marvin Vettori proved that he had Ostarine in his system because of tainted dietary supplements.
Rachael Ostovich also tested positive due to a tainted supplement and served eight months of suspension.
Case of Ostarine (Boxing)
Amir Khan tested positive for Ostarine and given a two-year suspension. An independent tribunal determined his consumption of Ostarine was unintentional but the suspension was maintained. He did not defend himself against the two-year suspension since he was retired.
ShowBizz’ Take: Based on the amount Ryan had in his system and the time frame of the consumption, his case is going to be determined to be of unintentional consumption of Ostarine. However, because the banned substance was in his system, he’s going to be penalized.
Fighters should/need to go to USADA’s list of contaminated products and check if any supplement they take is on the list. Additionally, if the fighter can afford it, they should send their supplements to a lab to make sure they are clean.
