(The REMATCH!) Behind The Head THEORY!
Since the rematch between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence is taking place, as boxing analysts we need to access how Spence can possibly do better. We already know Crawford is great and therefore the outcome of the rematch should be similar unless Spence shows improvement.
Spence’s skills will most likely not change for this rematch given the stage of his career, however, can Spence win the rematch by being Errol Spence?
Have we ever seen a fighter who won a rematch after being dominated in the first contest? Yes, Anthony Joshua defeated Andy Ruiz Jr. in their rematch. Joshua got caught by an equilibrium-affecting punch in the first fight.
Jermell Charlo has expressed his opinion that Crawford hit Spence behind the ear and from that point on Spence was not the same. The commonality between Joshua and Spence in their respective performances was losing their equilibrium.
Why was Spence susceptible to getting hit behind the ear after lunging in when attacking? His teeth. His teeth? Yes. The strength of a chin and a fighter’s skills and attributes is part determined by a fighter’s mind. And being worried about your teeth, as Spence has expressed such concern, would affect your defense and ability to be offensively effective.
Spence likely needs more energy and to not turn his head during exchanges in order to have improvement in the rematch.
