The WBC’s New Confusing Policy

The president of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaiman, has declared that Errol Spence’s fight against Keith Thurman at 154 lbs. is going to be officially sanctioned by the WBC. This declaration by Sulaiman appears to suggest or rather state that if Spence were to defeat Thurman in their bout at 154 lbs., not 147 lbs., Spence would fulfill his mandatory duty as a welterweight champion.

And if Thurman were to defeat Spence, he would be the new WBC welterweight champion. Sulaiman, by making such statement, has developed some concerns, questions and confusion with respect to boxing championship policy. Is Errol Spence the WBC franchise champion? Are all WBC champions basically ‘franchise’ champions?

According to Sulaiman, after the boxing match between Spence and Thurman, the WBC will clarify their policy and make a ruling. Thus, at this point, as boxing fans, we can only wait for such clarification although much confusion was created by Sulaiman’s declaration.
